Staff Engineer (Enablement)

What ties us together is the objectivity of our opinion, the originality of our insight and our advocacy of economic and political freedom around the world.We are looking for a *Senior **Engineer (DevOps) *who will report directly to the Enablement Engineering Manager for The Economist, be based out of our Birmingham engineering hub and be a member of the enablement team which is responsible for engineering DevOps across all of our Economist product engineering teams.Our engineering enablement team which aims to help our product engineering teams deliver changes to production quickly and reliably. You’ll do this by working closely with the other engineering managers in the group, understanding their needs and problems to deliver an enablement roadmap.The successful candidate will join the team at a time of significant development and growth and the need for technology excellence and digital customer experience becomes paramount in our ability to deliver this.You’ll be supported by a friendly and inclusive team who have the autonomy to define and improve processes and care deeply about developing each other's capabilities.This is the time to be joining a profitable, responsible business with a brand and culture that you can be proud of and with every opportunity to deliver success for the Group and yourself.***How you will contribute:** Reporting to the Enablement Engineering Manager, you will be a part of the enablement engineering team establishing and advocating engineering best practices across the organisation* Monitor end-to-end availability and performance of mission critical services and build automation to prevent problem recurrence* Design, write and deliver software to improve the availability, scalability, latency, and efficiency of Economist services* Enable product engineering teams with best in class tooling and practices* Champion DevOps culture across The Economist***The ideal skills for this role include:** Extensive technical background in engineering in an agile environment* Depth of experience in Cloud (i.e. AWS) and infrastructure as code* You are a passionate advocate for modern DevOps best practices and culture* Understand the importance of using metrics to influence product and technical decisions* Experience working with or across multiple stream aligned engineering teams.* Technical project management skills* A keen interest in observability best practices and an understanding of the value they bring* Experience in automation quality tooling, CI/CD and unit testingThe Economist Group values diversity.
